How to convert steps to miles
To convert steps to miles, multiply your steps by the length of one step, then divide by the length of a mile:
miles = steps × step length in metres ÷ 1,609.344
A mile is exactly 1,609.344 metres and a foot is exactly 0.3048 metres (NIST), so the only number that changes from person to person is the step length.
Worked example: with an average step of 76.2 cm (2.5 ft), 10,000 steps × 0.762 m = 7,620 metres. Divide that by 1,609.344 and you get 4.73 miles, or 7.62 km.
How do I convert steps to miles? Take your step count, multiply it by your step length and divide by a mile. The calculator above does this as you type, and shows km, metres, feet and walking time at the same time. Whether you call it steps to miles or steps to mileage, the maths is the same, so it works as a steps to mileage calculator too.
Steps to miles by height
Step length is often estimated from height: about 41.3% of height for women and 41.5% for men. Pedestrian navigation research uses this rule to turn counted steps into distance (Klein, 2024), and it's what Better mode in the calculator uses. Because the estimate grows with height, a taller walker covers more ground in the same number of steps.
Here's how steps to miles based on height works out with that rule:
| Height | Step | Steps per mile |
|---|---|---|
| 150 cm (4 ft 11 in) | 61.9 cm | 2,598 |
| 160 cm (5 ft 3 in) | 66.1 cm | 2,435 |
| 170 cm (5 ft 7 in) | 70.2 cm | 2,292 |
| 180 cm (5 ft 11 in) | 74.3 cm | 2,165 |
| 190 cm (6 ft 3 in) | 78.5 cm | 2,051 |
| Height | Step | Steps per mile |
|---|---|---|
| 150 cm (4 ft 11 in) | 62.2 cm | 2,585 |
| 160 cm (5 ft 3 in) | 66.4 cm | 2,424 |
| 170 cm (5 ft 7 in) | 70.6 cm | 2,281 |
| 180 cm (5 ft 11 in) | 74.7 cm | 2,154 |
| 190 cm (6 ft 3 in) | 78.9 cm | 2,041 |
It's still an estimate. Two people of the same height can have quite different strides, and your step changes with pace. For a number that's truly yours, measure your stride as shown below and use Exact mode.

How far is 1,000 steps? About 0.47 miles, which is 762 metres or 2,500 feet. More on the 1,000 steps to miles page.
These are steps to miles average figures, so expect your own distance to land a little above or below them depending on your height and stride.
How to measure your own stride in 5 steps
Measuring your stride takes a couple of minutes and gives you the most accurate answer the calculator can offer.
- Find a flat, straight path where you can walk at least 10 steps, such as a pavement or a long hallway.
- Stand still and mark the spot at the toe of your front foot.
- Walk 10 normal steps at your usual pace, without stretching your stride.
- Mark where the same toe lands on your last step, and measure the distance in metres, or in feet and inches.
- Enter that distance in Exact mode. The calculator divides it by 10 to get your step length.
If you can, repeat it two or three times and use the middle result. Your walk on an ordinary day is what you want to measure, not your fastest.
Miles to steps, and steps on a treadmill
To go the other way, divide the distance by your step length. With an average 76.2 cm step there are about 2,112 steps in a mile, so 3 miles is about 6,336 steps and 5 km is about 6,562 steps.
Miles to steps on a treadmill works the same way, but your step may not be the same. A review of studies comparing the two found that step length is shorter when walking on a treadmill than over ground (Vickery-Howe et al.), so the same distance can take more steps.
To find your treadmill step length, walk a set distance as shown on the treadmill's display, note how many steps you took, and divide the distance by the steps. Multiply that by 10 and enter it in Exact mode.
Track your steps to miles every day
The calculator answers one question; My Walks keeps the answers. Press Log today's walk and your steps to miles walked that day are saved to a calendar, along with your streak, total distance and a milestone to unlock every 30 days.
It's a simple steps to miles tracker with no account. The log stays in your browser, and you can download it as a file whenever you like. When you want to share a walk, Share my walk makes a picture card of your steps, miles and walking time that you can send to friends or save.
How many steps a day is enough
There's no single magic number. The famous 10,000-step goal likely comes from the name of a pedometer sold in Japan in 1965, Manpo-kei, which translates as "10,000 steps meter" (Lee et al., 2019).
Research on step counts and health points to benefits below that. A meta-analysis of 15 groups of adults found that the risk of death kept falling as daily steps rose, until about 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day for adults aged 60 and over, and about 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day for younger adults (Paluch et al., 2022).
In a study of older women, those averaging about 4,400 steps a day had lower death rates than the least active women, and rates fell further with more steps until they levelled off at about 7,500 steps a day (Lee et al., 2019).
For reference, with an average step 6,000 steps is about 2.84 miles and 8,000 steps is about 3.79 miles. These findings describe groups of people rather than giving advice for you, so treat them as a guide.
